TWO-FACTOR AUTHENTICATION

A way of logging into a service which requires two parts — usually a password, plus another single use code. The idea is that, even if someone does find out your password, they won’t be getting in without a fresh code.

FRIEND REQUEST

The way Facebook users connect with people they know — or people that they want to know.

TIMELINE

All your Facebook posts are arranged in chronological order — at least in theory. However, that is not always the case, as the site will pick and choose what it has deduced to be the most interesting for you.

01 ACCOUNT PROTECTION

Use the ‘Security and login’ section to lock your account and so prevent unwanted intrusion.

02 GET UNFRIENDLY

Unsolicited requests from people you don’t really know can be unsettling — block them in the Privacy section.

03 REVIEW YOUR TAGS

See what friends are posting about you by activating ‘tag reviewing’ under the ‘Timeline and tagging’ option.

04 BLOCK AND MUTE

Remove every nuisance, from troublesome friends to annoying app requests, in the Blocking section.

05 BACKUP NOW

Even if you’re not concerned about security, you may want to keep a copy of your account data in case of disaster.

06 START SETTING UP

To find all of these settings, use the Settings option in Facebook’s less-than-obvious drop-down menu.
